Ben Watson owns and runs four farm shops, one based on the farm at Riverford, one at Sidmouth, one at Kitley, near Plymouth and the other in the centre of Totnes. The shops sell a wide range of organic and local produce with traditional butchers counters selling exclusively local meat. Each shop also has its own delicatessen, dairy and vegetable sections, but it is what goes on behind the scenes that makes the shops so unique. From the butchery and kitchen flow a seemingly never-ending stream of dry cured bacon, home made sausages, hand crafted bread, pies and pasties, cooked meals, cakes and more. The shops also import and stock a range of wines, beers and ciders from all over the World.
Riverford Farm Food sausages and burgers came top in an organic tasting organised by the Observer in November 2003 and the shop at the farm was voted 'best independent and local retailer' in the Observer Food Awards in 2007.
Riverford Meat Boxes, from the shops butchery, are available from this website with the vegetable boxes.
The shop in Totnes fits in well with 'Transition Town Totnes'. What better model for post peak oil food production than a town shop selling food from the immediate surroundings.
